Whale Watching in the South Pacific of Costa Rica

In Costa Rica the breathtaking scenery of the South Pacific is a reason enough to justify a travel by boat from the Golfo Dulce to the shores of Quepos in the hope of being able to envision the world’s largest mammals in their natural habitat. But when visitors are fortunate enough to see one of these giants on the surface, swimming, blowing, and playing, they know they have had an experience that will last a lifetime. The entire nation of Costa Rica has much pride and joy in knowing that these giants visit their marine waters, especially knowing that these gentle animals visiting the waters of Costa Rica for mating and caring for their brood.

From November to March, and then from July to September, the whales can be found in the South Pacific coast of Costa Rica, as they come to the area to give birth to their offspring in a quiet and rich in nutrient environment where the brood can be protected and grow strong enough to continue making the migration of whales between the northern and southern hemispheres.

There are huge populations of resident dolphins up and down both coasts of Costa Rica, so it’s quite probably that you can take a view of these playful creatures as well. The dolphins normally follow the boats that are navigating the beautiful waters of the region. The best places in the South Pacific to see whales are:

Dominical Beach in Costa Rica
Whale National Marine Park, just south of Dominical is named because the Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) that migrate there every year. Also spotted dolphins can be seen in the area. If you are really interested in seeing whales, it is better to take a day trip to Drake Bay and Isla del Caño, where the whales can be seen almost every day during its peak season. Day trips to Drake’s Bay are available on Dominical, Sierpe, Puerto Jimenez and other towns of the South Pacific.

Whales and dolphins are commonly seen in the area of Drake Bay, with its calm and protected waters that are perfect for reproduction and to give birth, the area is the perfect place to visit these gentle giants. Drake Bay is also home to the longest season of humpback whales in the world with whales of the North and South America that come here to breed and give birth. From Drake Bay to you can take a trip to Isla del Caño and Corcovado National Park every month of the year except April, May and June.

Surfing in Costa Rica

For a lot of people is the paradise for surfers, Costa Rica has been for some time one of the top surfing destinations in the world for a lot of reasons. For example the perfect breaking point of the waves on the beaches and the perfect right-and left found here makes this small Central American country that is today the leader in the surfing world. With its beaches usually very clean, pristine and rarely congested, Costa Rica definitely has become the favorite a favorite surfer nest, especially for those who want to try some of the most challenging waves on the planet.

Costa Rica has a fantastic coastal climate, the water temperature is warm all year around, the shores of the Atlantic and the Pacific have at least 50 points very famous because their surf breaks all along the beach. Very beautiful and truly spectacular, the waves here are great with many wave breaks and with many corals along the entire coast. For the surfers these are the perfect places to enjoy and practice surfing. Although some of the beaches are not easily accessible due to poor road conditions, for a lot of surfers is the trip well worth because the waves are very good throughout the year. Some of the beaches with wave breaks like those that are seen in Playa Pavones have the longer journeys in the world and definitely justifies the arduous journey to this point.

Normally the beaches of Costa Rica that are less congested places like Sydney, Hawaii or Southern California also offer economic accommodation, hotels, resorts, local clinics, stores dedicated to rent at economical prices equipment for surfing and all its attractions. If you are doing surfing on the beaches of the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica keep in mind that the season for surfing is not very long partly because that many of the waves are produced by tropical storms of the Mexican coast. In the Pacific coast the waves are smaller but more consistent and usually generated by low pressure in remote regions like New Zealand. The biggest waves that can be enjoyed for the surfers can located on the coast of Costa Rica in the months of April through October, but it is from December to April that surfing is more clear and most favored.

The more important five destinations for surfing in Costa Rica are Hermosa Beach, Playa Grande, Playa Pavones, Salsa Brava and Rocas Embrujadas. However there are other popular popular points for the surfing in Costa Rica, for example Playa Dominical, Santa Teresa Beach Mal Pais Beach, Playa Negra, Junquillal Beach, Playa Naranjo and Playa Avellana. These beaches also noted for its beautiful natural scenery and relaxed lifestyle which fits perfectly with the lifestyle of surfers.
